European Court of Human Rights Rules in Favour of Applicants Arrested During “Electric Yerevan” Protests

On 11 June 2026, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered its judgment in Ashghyan and Poghosyan v. Armenia (Applications Nos. 5293/16 and 5295/16), finding that the applicants’ arrest during the 2015 “Electric Yerevan” protests was not based on a reasonable suspicion that they had committed an offence. As just satisfaction for the non-pecuniary harm suffered, the Court awarded each applicant EUR 2,000.

The applicants, Armenian nationals, were represented before the Court by ROLE and its Armenian partner organisation, Protection of Rights Without Borders NGO.

This judgment represents an important reaffirmation of the safeguards against arbitrary arrest and the protection of individuals participating in peaceful public assemblies.
