ROLE and Partners Deliver Online Training for Court Monitors in Ukraine

From 7 to 13 May 2026, ROLE experts, together with experts from the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (Poland) and ROLE’s Ukrainian partners, conducted a series of online training sessions for dozens of Ukrainian court monitors who will be engaged in monitoring proceedings before Ukraine’s anti-corruption courts.

The training programme was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to carry out systematic and objective court monitoring. The sessions focused on monitoring methodologies, relevant European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) standards, fair trial guarantees, judicial transparency, and key aspects of anti-corruption proceedings.

Drawing on their expertise in human rights protection, court monitoring, and judicial reform, the trainers shared international good practices and practical tools to support the monitors in assessing compliance with European human rights standards in judicial proceedings. Participants also had the opportunity to discuss practical challenges that may arise during monitoring activities and to exchange views on ensuring consistency and accuracy in data collection and reporting.

The training forms part of the broader court monitoring project implemented by ROLE and its partners, which seeks to evaluate the observance of ECtHR standards in Ukraine’s anti-corruption courts and contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen the rule of law and the administration of justice.

By building the capacity of a network of trained court monitors, the project aims to generate reliable findings and evidence-based recommendations that can support judicial improvements and further align Ukraine’s justice system with European standards. The initiative represents an important contribution to Ukraine’s continuing reform process and its path towards European integration.
